The Yamas & Niyamas: The Foundation for Spiritual Life
The Yamas and Niyamas are the moral and ethical guidelines for spiritual development. They are disciplines that transform the way we relate to ourselves, and the world. By adopting these timeless principles, the grip of Maya automatically begins to loosen itself and an inner transformation takes place that allows us access to higher states of consciousness.
This two part course is designed to allow us to go deep into these sacred teachings and to experience for ourselves their effects.
Part One: The Yamas – The 5 Great Vows
The Yamas purify our lower chakras and enhances our relationship with the world. They teach how to live with integrity, compassion, and self-mastery and reduce the mental and emotional disturbances that keep us bound to suffering.
The five Yamas are:
- Ahimsa – Non-violence. Cultivating kindness, compassion, and harmlessness toward ourselves and all living beings.
- Satya – Truthfulness. Living honestly and aligning with truth.
- Asteya – Non-stealing. Developing contentment, and appreciation for what is.
- Brahmacharya – Celibacy. Cultivating the sexual energy for spiritual experiences.
- Aparigraha – Non-attachment. Entering the state of flow and freedom.
We will explore each Yama and it furthers your spiritual journey. Through reflection and practice, you will discover how these principles gradually purify your entire personality and prepare you for spiritual experiences.
Times: Sept 16 – Nov 18 2026, 10 Wednesdays 11am – 1pm Mountain Time (19:00 – 21:00 German Time)

Part Two: The Niyamas – The 5 Great Disciplines
While the Yamas guide our relationship with the external world, the Niyamas focus on cultivating our inner life. They serve to develop our higher chakras so that we can receive light and divine inspiration.
The five Niyamas are:
- Saucha – Purity. Bringing clarity, simplicity and lightness to the body, mind and environment.
- Santosha – Contentment. Becoming established in the ever present joy within.
- Tapas – Disciplined practice. Cultivating the inner fire that burns away limitation and strengthens willpower.
- Svadhyaya – Self-study. Exploring the sacred teachings along with reflection and inquiry.
- Ishvara Pranidhana – Surrender to the Divine. Learning to trust in God or a higher divine consciousness.
We will examine each Niyama in detail.
Together, the Yamas and Niyamas create the foundation for a safe and authentic spiritual practice. They are living teachings that will gently open up the inner dimensions to reveal a deep and personal relationship with the Divine.
